Dr.E.M.C.van Houts

Letter dated 3rd April 1995. Ms van Houts is in my opinion one of the leading authorities in the world on the Norman period and has an extensive knowledge of documents from the period.(My comments in italics)
Dear Mr Austin,

Thank you very much indeed for your generous gift of the "Secrets of the Norman Invasion" which you published recently. I have now read it and think most of it is convincing.

I would certainly be happy to accept the site of Wilting Manor as the most likely place of William's landing. The fact that William of Jumieges refers to Pevensey does not particularly bother me. As I argue in the first volume of my edition of his chronicle, I do not think that he was very well informed about the crossing and the subsequent events in England. He may well have mentioned Pevensey because it was better known and roughly in the same area as the one you have pinpointed.

I particularly like your work you have done on Domesday book and the archaeological and geophysical studies which you have initiated.

Perhaps you could let me know when you would like to lift the label of confidentiality which is attached to your study (lifted 14th October 1995).

yours sincerely

Elisabeth van Houts
