Hastings Museum
Details of package received 31st October 1995
As a result of receiving such a positive response from South East Archaeological Services I decided to remove some more pottery from the same excavation at Chapel Field, Upper Wilting.
Due to the interpretive nature of pottery dating I thought this to be a sensible option. I therefore sent samples to Hastings Museum for their observation
On 31st October I received back a number of packages in polythene bags. Four of these contained interesting pottery relevant to the authentication of this as a medieval site worthy of investigation
Writing on the outside of each package recorded as follows:
- Base of pot. Finger print impression decoration on base likely to be 14th - 15century ware (examined by JM and ZU) Malcolm Lyne.
- Fragment of green glazed jar - 16th century (examined by JM and ZU).
- Grey Ware rim sherd 14th century (examined by JM and ZU)
- 15 assorted medieval cooking pot sherds 12th-14th century (Malcolm Lyne)
Two further encrusted iron objects were returned unexamined with the comment that they were difficult to date except by juxtaposition with other objects. In fact these were found at the deepest section of the excavation and I would be interested if anyone would like to make a proper examination of them.
Correspondence was with Jane Marley at Hastings Museum
