4 June, 1996 Mr N. Austin Hye House Crowhurst East Sussex TN33 9BX

Dear Mr Austin,

RE: BULK EARTH MOVEMENT AT UPPER WILTING FARM

Further to our recent discussions and our meeting on site to take measurements of the top field at the above I would confirm the following.

Overall approximate areas were measured using a surveyors wheel and depths of subsoil/topsoil have been taken from Wessex Archaeological's Report showing a cross section through the ground to trench B.

I have therefore assumed that the depth remains constant to the South East and North West up to the boundaries i.e. 800 mm to the South East and 350mm to the North West.

1. Total Area of higher and lower fields = 36808 m2

2. Depths of fields: Higher section - 1.30 depth, at bank 0.80 depth at South East end 2.10
Therefore average depth 1.05
Lower section constant 3 50mm deep.

3. Assuming depths as stated above the total subsoil/topsoil over the field originally would have been:

Area of higher section - 26498 x average depth of 1 .05m = 27823 m3
Area of lower section - 10309 x depth of 0.35m = 3608 m3
Therefore total volume of subsoil/topsoil originally on fields = 27823 + 3608 =31431m3 or 44632Tonnes
This would have related to an average original depth of 850 mm.

4. Therefore allowing for a present depth of 350 mm to the lower section the total subsoill topsoil moved from this area and spread to the higher section would have been:

850 - 350 = SOOmm x Area of lower section = 10309 giving a total volume of 5154.50m3 or 7139 Tonnes.

5. If one were to move this amount of subsoil/topsoil using say a 21 Tonne 360 degrees excavator and two dumpers (3 Tonne) it would take somewhere in the region of 6-8 weeks constantly.

One cannot image the movement of such a quantity of soil by hand but it would have probably taken years to do.

I hope this provides you with the information you require.

Yours sincerely

W. BLAKE
